National Oilwell Varco Shaffer® Spherical BOP - Blow Out Preventer available from World Petroleum Supply.

National Oilwell Varco Shaffer® record of reliability in pressure control equipment is the result of continual research and development, advanced manufacturing techniques, stringent quality control and steady follow-through on after-the-sale training, service and parts. This reliability is available in ram, annular and rotating blowout preventers and in choke and kill manifold gate valves. Each pressure control product has features to increase the efficiency of your drilling or workover operations. A Ram BOP is a safety unit used during the drilling or workover operation to control well bore fluid pressure. The BOP achieves wellbore pressure control by closing rams to seal around drilling tubulars and open hole, or to shear and seal drilling tubulars under various drilling conditions. Under normal drilling the BOP experiences little or no internal pressure. However, if while drilling, a high-pressure oil or gas pocket is encountered in the well, the BOP rams can be closed to prevent the high-pressure returning well fluid (whose pressure is greater than the weight of the drilling mud) from blowing out of the well.

  • Shaffer Model NXT™ Ram BOPs are designed primarily for high-working pressure subsea and jackup operations, and have quick ram changing features.
  • Shaffer Model LXT™ Ram BOPs are short, compact, lightweight and ideal for well servicing, workover, fracturing and low pressure drilling.
  • Shaffer Model SL™ Ram BOPs are designed for large bore and high working pressure subsea and deep land drilling.

National Oilwell Varco continues to develop solutions to enhance and increase productive drilling time. Among these solutions are an extensive Ram product line and advanced Ram locking system options.

The Annular BOP is a different type of safety unit used to control wellbore fluids. This type of BOP consists of a large rubber sealing element which is mechanically squeezed inward to seal on tubulars or the open hole. The ability to seal on a variety of pipe sizes is one advantage the annular blowout preventer has over ram-type blowout preventers.

Shaffer Spherical BOPs seal onto almost any shape or size of kellys, tool joints, drill pipe, drill collar, casing, and wireline, in addition to closing on an open hole. This capability permits stripping of drill pipe under well pressure. The Shaffer element can provide up to five times more life than the sealing elements of conventional Annulars. It closes upward and inward in a smooth spherical motion, rather than horizontally only. Internal stresses are reduced, as is the friction between the sealing element and the BOP body.

Shaffer Spherical BOPs are manufactured In two versions - the Wedge cover model, and the Bolted-cover model. The Wedge cover models are, in general, the larger Sphericals and can operate under high working pressures.

National Oilwell Varco offers unmatched experience in BOP Control Systems as the only supplier of original Koomey® products. The product line includes conventional Minuteman and Multiplex systems for all surface and subsea drilling applications.

National Oilwell Varco offers a complete range of Marine Riser Systems that consistently provide the performance and rugged durability required for all depths of drilling application.

National Oilwell Varco manufactures Riser Support Systems, Riser Tensioners, and Rucker™'" Motion Compensation Systems offering field proven support and stability necessary for your successful drilling operations.

Shaffer Gate Valves meet the requirements for choke and kill manifold service in adverse field conditions, land or offshore, and give you choices in manual or remote operation as well as bore sizes and working pressures.

Shaffer® Annular / Spherical Blow Out Preventers

NOV Shaffer® Bolted-Cover Spherical BOP, Blow Out Preventer

National Oilwell Varco's Shaffer Spherical BOP is one of the first lines of defense in controlling a well. When actuated, hydraulic pressure operates the piston, and in turn closes the spherical. The Spherical's closure occurs in a smooth, simultaneous upward and inward motion, as opposed to horizontal motion..

FEATURES:.

Shaffer® Spherical blowout preventers are compact, annular type BOPs that seal reliably on almost any shape or size kelly, drill pipe, tool joint, drill collar, casing or wireline. Sphericals also provide positive pressure control for stripping drill pipe into and out of the hole. They are available in bolted cover, wedge cover, dual wedge cover and NXT models that contain each of the following special features:NOV Shaffer® Wedge-Cover Spherical BOP, Blow Out Preventer available at World Petroleum Supply, Inc.

  • Rugged, reliable sealing element provides positive seal after hundreds of tests to full working pressure
  • Strong, simple construction; only five major parts
  • Compact body saves space; height is 15 to 20% less than height of some other annular BOPs
  • Simple hydraulic system; only two hydraulic connections are needed
  • Wear rings on moving parts prevent metal-to-metal contact; this feature prolongs preventer life
  • Suitable for H2S service. Standard models are suitable for internal H2S service, simple bolt and lifting shackle changes convert them for external H2S service
  • Servicing is easy; element can be changed without getting mud or grit into the hydraulic system
  • Steel segments reinforce sealing element but do not protrude into well bore when element is open
  • Element design provides long stripping life
  • Manufactured in accordance with API Specification 16A, Third Edition, June 2004 and NACE MR0175 per API Specification 16A, Temperature T20, Standard nitrile packing element: 40°F to 170°F
NOV Shaffer® Spherical BOP Sizes and Models Chart.

Sphericals are generally 15 to 20% shorter than comparable annular preventers; this is a big advantage when installation space is limited. NXT design further reduces weight and height by eliminating the bolting flange through the base of the spherical bottom directly to the ram body. For applications that require two Sphericals, dual wedge cover preventers incorporate two sealing elements, adapter rings and pistons into one housing. Each sealing assembly operates independently of the other, yet the dual preventer is up to 20% shorter than two singles stacked one on top of the other.

All Shaffer Sphericals operate at 1,500 psi, whereas some competitive units require much higher pressures, thus increasing accumulator size and cost to meet code requirements.

Wear rings prolong the life of the piston and the piston seals by eliminating metal-to-metal contact between the piston and the lower housing of the preventer. Wiper seals are used in places where debris might accumulate between metal parts and accelerate wear. Wide clearances allow any debris to flow off the wiper seals without damaging metal sealing surfaces. All dynamic seals are lip type, specially made to seal against moving parts with minimum wear.

Shaffer standard Sphericals meet all applicable American Petroleum Institute (API) and National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) requirements for internal H2S service. Field conversion for external H2S service involves changing only the studs, nuts and lifting shackles. Arctic models which meet API 16A specifications for low temperature service also are available.

Shaffer Sphericals require only two hydraulic connections one for opening and one for closing. On some of the larger models, additional ports are provided for convenience when attaching hydraulic I Ines.

Servicing a Shaffer Spherical preventer in the field is simple. The upper housing lifts off for easy access to all internal components. The adapter ring protects the piston and hydraulic chamber from mud and grit while the element is being changed. Only one seal is disturbed. This is not true of some other annular preventers.

Shaffer® Spherical BOP Sealing Element The success of NOV's Shaffer Sphericals is due primarily to the ruggedness and reliability of their sealing element. Hundreds of pressure tests to full working pressure have proven its ability to maintain a positive seal. Tests performed in an industry program sponsored by 22 companies including three major BOP manufacturers, proved the Shaffer Spherical element lasts two to four times longer than elements in other annular preventers. The element retains its ability to return to the opened position longer than other sealing packers do. The long sealing life of the element gives Shaffer Sphericals a high degree of reliability and keeps maintenance costs, as well as operating costs, to a minimum.

Steel segments molded into the element partially close over the rubber to prevent excessive extrusion when sealing under high pressures. These segments always move out of the well bore when the element returns to the open position, even when the element is worn far beyond normal replacement condition.

Stripping Operations

Stripping operations are undoubtedly the most severe application for any preventer because of the wear the sealing element is exposed to as the drill string is moved through the preventer under pressure. To prolong sealing element life, it is important to use proper operating procedures when stripping. The recommended procedures are:

Shaffer® Spherical BOP Stripping Operations
  • Close the preventer with a maximum of 1,500 psi closing pressure.
  • Just prior to commencing stripping operations, reduce closing pressure to a value sufficient to allow a slight flow.
  • If conditions allow, stripping should be done with a slight flow to provide lubrication and prevent excessive temperature buildup in the element. As the sealing element wears, the closing pressure will need to be incrementally increased to prevent excessive leakage.
  • If conditions will not allow leakage during stripping operations, the closing pressure should be adjusted to a value just sufficient to maintain a seal.
  • As required closing pressures approach 1 ,500 psi, consideration should be given to switching to another preventer to complete stripping operations. The minimum pressure required to maintain a seal during stripping would vary depending on the particular element and its service history.

Smooth, Dependable Action

Stripping is smooth with a Shaffer Spherical because the element opens and closes so easily. The steel segments molded into the rubber make metal-to-metal sliding contact with the sphere of the housing. This provides a much lower coefficient of friction than rubber-to-metal contact. Well pressure assists will not cause it to oversea!, since the element's design and method of energization counteract the well bore pressure acting on the piston. During stripping out, well pressure and pipe movements are in the same direction. Rubber compresses firmly against the steel segments at the top of the element, but rubber at the bottom is only lightly compressed. This creates a "funnel effect" that makes it easy for a tool joint to enter the sealing element. Hydraulic pressure bleeds off, allowing the element to expand and accommodate the larger O.D. of the tool joint.

When stripping in, well pressure and pipe movement oppose each other. Well pressure compresses the rubber portion of the element against the steel segments as the tool joint moves down into the Spherical.

Choice of Rubber Compounds

Sealing elements are available in natural and Nitrile rubber compounds. This allows the Spherical to be fitted for any type of service water base mud, oil base mud, and low temperature. Natural rubber offers excellent fatigue and wear life in water base muds, and operates well in lower temperatures. This allows the Spherical to be fitted for any type of service; water base mud, oil base mud, and low temperature.

Single and Dual Snubber BOPS

With the single and dual snubbing BOPs operation, time is reduced by eliminating conventional ram-to-ram snubbing. Both single and dual snubber blowout preventers have a working pressure of 5,000 and 10,000 psi. And just like the Spherical BOPs, the snubbers utilize the Shaffer 10,000 psi spherical packing element with its field proven design. This explains why there is a long life under the harsh snubbing conditions of passing tool joints and couplings through the element.

In these single and dual snubbers, maintenance is also made faster and easier. The two-piece snubbing element enables easy replacement with pipe in the well. For more assistance in rapid removal of the element, there is a hydraulically operated quick-release bonnet and an easy lift upper housing. The easy-lift upper housing further assists in rapid snubbing element removal with hydraulic cylinders integral to the BOP housing. In all, only eight minutes are needed to replace a snubbing element.

Shaffer® RAM BOP Family

Shaffer® NXT® BOP Blowout Preventer

NXT® RAM BLOWOUT PREVENTER

After years of limited changes in the development of BOP design, National Oilwell Varco's line of Shaffer'" NXT BOP Systems offers the drilling industry improved drilling economics in a new generation of well control systems. This new generation BOP has changed the performance expectations for pressure control equipment, offering significant operational advantages and features.

The NXT includes XT'" "Boltless Doors" and a "No-Weld Cavity". Single, double and triple cavity models are available for working pressures of 5,000, 10,000 and 15,000 psi. The double and triple models save space and weight by combining two or three ram compartments into one unitized body. Lock options include Poslock®, Ultralock'", and ManualLock systems. NXT BOPs are manufactured in accordance with API Specification 16A, Third Edition, June 2004 and NACE MR0175 per API Specification 16A, Temperature T20

NOV's Shaffer NXT BOP offers a number of benefits and has significantly improved safety and efficiency, with quick access using boltless doors.

Features:

Boltless Doors

National Oilwell Varco Shaffer® BOP Systems are unique in highlighting a means of significantly improving safety and efficiency in the critical path of activity. With the replacement of the large door bolts in ram BOPs Shaffer has eliminated the manual practice of using brute force to torque up a series of large bolts. With the elimination of the large doors bolts in these ram BOPs, Shaffer'" has eliminated the time-consuming practice of using hydraulic tools to manually torque-up multiple door bolts. There are a number of benefits with this development.

  • Reduced Weight (lightest BOP systems in the industry)
  • Reduced Height (smallest BOP systems in the industry)
  • Elimination of Manual Labor under time pressure
  • Elimination of cross threading bolts
  • Ram changes go from 4 hours to 40 minutes (15 Minutes with an ARC® Automated Changer)

Door Operating Principle

Shaffer® Ram BOP Components

The NXT "Boltless Door" assembly is mechanized using hydraulics to lock, unlock, open and close the door. The lock and unlock process is done with hydraulic cylinders mounted on the doors used to engage and disengage a locking bar system. These load bearing lock bars, housed in the door grooves, lock the door and body together.

Hydraulic System

Hydraulic power to operate a Model NXT ram BOP can be furnished by any standard oil field accumulator system. Hydraulic passages drilled through the body eliminate the need for external manifold pipes between the hinges. Each set of rams requires only one opening and one closing line. There are two opening and two closing hydraulic ports, clearly marked, on the back side of the BOP. The extra hydraulic ports facilitate the connection of the control system to the preventer.

A standard hydraulic accumulator unit will close any model NXT ram with rated working pressure in the well bore.

18-3/4” BOP Systems

Shaffer® NXT® BOP Blowout Preventer

The Introduction of the NXT® Ram BOP was initially in the 18-¾”, 15,000 psi size. This system was designed to enable a stack height and weight package similar to a 13-5/8” BOP configuration and provide the capability of eliminating the dual stack drilling system with a through bore wellhead connector. Actuation of the boltless door mechanism is available in two configurations:

  • Remote or door mounted hydraulic operation
  • Simple manual mechanical door actuation at the ram door.

No-Weld Cavity

Shaffer's no-weld cavity feature, introduced in the SLX model ram blowout preventer, is standard on the NXT ram blowout preventer. This no-weld cavity feature allows upgrade of the BOP to "as new" condition by introducing replaceable parts to the cavity. Post-weld heat treatments and extensive in-shop repairs are thus eliminated. The noweld cavity has a replaceable seal seat, a replaceable skid plate and replaceable side pads.

NXT® Lock Options

NXT Ultralock II Ram Locking System

The Ultralock II locking system incorporates a mechanical locking mechanism within the piston assembly. This locking system is not dependant on closing pressure to maintain a positive lock. It uses flat tapered locking segments carried by the operating piston which engages another stationary tapered shaft located within the operating cylinder.

The system needs no adjustments, no matter the size of the pipe rams. Different size or type ram assemblies can be freely interchanged.

Only one hydraulic function is required to operate the cylinders open/close function and the locking system. The system automatically locks in the closed position each time the piston assembly is closed. Once the operating piston is closed on the pipe, the locks are engaged until opening pressure is applied. Only hydraulic pressure can unlock and reopen the preventer.

NXT Poslock {Shear Operator) System

NXT preventers equipped with Poslock pistons are locked automatically in the closed position each time they are closed. The preventers will remain locked in the closed position even if closing pressure is removed. Open hydraulic pressure is required to reopen the pistons. The hydraulics required to operate the Poslock are provided through opening and closing operating ports. Operation of the Poslock requires no additional hydraulic functions, such as are required in some competitive ram locking systems.

NXT Manual-Lock Systems

Manual-lock pistons move inward and close the rams when closing, hydraulic pressure is applied. If desired, the rams can be manually locked in the closed position by turning each locking shaft to the right until it shoulders against the cylinder head. Should hydraulic pressure fail, the rams can be manually closed and locked. They cannot be manually reopened.

Manually locking shafts are visible from outside, and provide a convenient ram position indicator. Threads on the manual locking shaft are enclosed in the hydraulic fluid and are not exposed to corrosion from mud and salt water or to freezing.

See RAM BOP Lock Option Section.

Note that rams are priced separately from the BOP, and the customer is asked to specify the ram sizes to be installed in the cavities at the time of order placement.

NXT Shear Booster Operators

Three styles of shear booster operators are available. The standard NXT body is available with the Super Booster with a Poslock'" system aided by two tandem boost pistons. This produces the force required to shear today's high CHARPY drill pipe. The 14" x 14" (35.6 mm x 35.6 mm) compact shear booster design incorporates a Poslock system with a single 14" diameter boost piston. The 14" x 14" compact design is also capable of shearing today's high CHARPY drill pipe with 3,000 psi operating pressure. The preferred-offering extended NXT body incorporates a 22" shear operator with a 5,000 psi working pressure (see figures) and Poslock® system. This operator is designed to shear the latest offering of 5"Va" high CHARPY drill pipe, large diameter casing, and the future offerings of larger diameter (6"Va") high CHARPY drill pipe without a booster. While capable of operating with a 3,000 psi hydraulic supply, the 22" operator reaches full capability when a 5,000 psi hydraulic system is used as its supply. A 3,000 psi hydraulic system provides similar shear force to that of the Super and Compact booster operators.

Shaffer® NXT® BOP Blowout Preventer - Closing Pressure

Control Manifold Option

Hydraulic door functions are operated through a control manifold assembly. The assembly is mounted to a plate for convenient customer installation.

Test Cavity Option

The lower BOP ram cavity may be ordered "inverted" to seal on pressure above the ram assembly. This optional configuration of the ram cavity permits surface pressure testing of the BOP without the need to trip a test plug. Note: The test cavity is not bidirectional; that is, it does not seal with pressure below the rams.

ARC® Ram Changing System

Shaffer® NXT® BOP Blowout Preventer - Closing Pressure

The Automated Ram Changing System (ARC®) has the potential to dramatically reduce, and possibly eliminate, lost time incidents by removing all hands-on activity involved in changing rams. Manpower may be reduced by 50% allowing for ram changing activities to be performed by a crew of 1-2 instead of the 4-5 conventionally required. Safety of rig personnel and cost savings realized are just some of the benefits of using the ARC®.

A ram-changing arm quickly and accurately retrieves and replaces rams in minutes, from a simple removable storage magazine.

Features of the ARC® include:

  • Magazine Capacity: 2 or more
  • Configurable to jack-up, platform or subsea applications.
  • Reduced ram change time, and lower, costs, when ARC® is combined with NOV"s Shaffer™ XT boltless doors.
  • Removes requirement for rig personnel to perform the dangerous task of ram change out manually.

Operational Benefits

Subsea

  • Extended length of subsea deployment
  • In deep water, saves time and money by not having to pull the stack and run stack back to bottom
  • Remote subsea ram change
  • Redundant cavity not a necessity
  • Fewer cavities equate to lighter, more compact stacks
  • With ram reconfiguration as an automated method, the use of more reliable fixed bore pipe rams can be increased. This means increased reliability sealing at higher pressures, longer ram rubber life, and greater hang-off capacity.
  • Ram-to-Ram stripping or snubbing becomes practical because of the ability to replace worn ram rubbers.
  • Shaffer® NXT® BOP Blowout Preventer - Closing Pressure

Surface

  • Reduction of manpower and equipment when using automated bonnet access system
  • Torque wrenched and hammer wrenches no longer necessary.
  • Rig hands are free to work in less hazardous areas.
  • Space constraints on surface and jack-up rigs make manually changing out rams a labor intensified and dangerous task. By using this system, manpower is reduced and safety is improved.

The specifications and dimensions given are for the 13 5/8” 10,000 psi manual lock SLX. The Shaffer model SLX ram BOP can be supplied with booster cylinders if required. See Figure 2-1 on Page 2-2.

Safety Precautions

Exposure to the daily hazards of drilling can lead rig crews and service personnel to disregard or overlook hidden hazards. The safety precautions listed below should be observed at all times.

Equipment Repairs or Adjustments

Turn off the system power and bleed all pressure prior to making any repairs or adjustments that do not require system power.

Hydraulic Lines

Hydraulic lines carrying fluids at high pressures can inflict potentially fatal injuries if the pressure escapes. Protect hydraulic lines from cutting, scraping, pinching, or other physical damage. Always wear hard hats and safety glasses when working around hydraulic lines. Bleed the pressure from any hydraulic line prior to disconnecting any fittings. Respect the prescribed ASME code minimum bend radius for hydraulic lines. Bending around too short a radius can rupture the line.

Welding and Cutting

Do not weld or operate acetylene-cutting torches near unprotected electrical cable, flexible hose, or hose bundles. Weld spatter can seriously damage the hose or cable. Ensure no slag or spatter enters the hydraulic system.

Replacement Parts

Many of the BOP components, though apparently similar to commercial hardware, are manufactured to system design specifications. To avoid possible hazardous failures, use only exact replacement parts or assemblies. Contact World Petroleum Supply for details.
